MIDDELBURG, Mpumalanga — Growing concerns over poor service delivery in Middelburg, Mpumalanga, have prompted urgent calls for government intervention, with Premier Mandla Ndlovu pledging decisive action to address the region’s escalating water, electricity, and housing crises.
The mounting frustrations were brought to the forefront during the ‘Taking the Legislature to the People’ programme, a week-long provincial government initiative designed to allow residents to voice their grievances directly to lawmakers and government officials.
Key challenges highlighted by the community include severe water shortages, poor drinking water quality, and accumulating refuse strewn across local streets. Additionally, residents reported malfunctioning street lights in several areas, prolonged waiting periods for RDP housing, and exorbitant municipal tariffs despite ongoing struggles with basic utility provision.
Community members voiced their daily hardships directly to the officials. “The water is dirty and we can’t drink it,” one resident stated. Another community member highlighted the frustration of waiting years for an RDP house while still being burdened by high municipal tariffs for inconsistent water and electricity services, urging the municipality to reduce its rates.
Closing the four-day event, Mpumalanga Premier Mandla Ndlovu directed officials to act swiftly on the issues raised, stressing that water challenges must be addressed urgently across the province.
“Our people are talking about water, and we have to pay special attention to water, especially people that are staying in farm areas who don’t have access to water,” Premier Ndlovu stated. He announced plans to invite the Minister of Water Affairs to assist, acknowledging that the current demand exceeds the municipality’s capacity to resolve the problem independently.
Premier Ndlovu emphasized that the purpose of these public engagements extends beyond merely listening and providing superficial answers. He noted that some of the requests being made require the government to return to the drawing board to explore whether budget adjustments can be utilized to intervene effectively and deliver tangible results.
In addition to the public engagement sessions, members of the legislature conducted oversight visits to various government projects and investment sites in the area to assess progress, ensure accountability, and align ongoing developments with the community’s pressing needs.
