Morocco secured a record 44 medals at the 20th Mediterranean Games, with 16 gold, 9 silver and 19 bronze, to finish seventh in the overall standings in Taranto.
The historic haul surpassed all previous Moroccan records at the Games, marking a major milestone for the country’s sporting achievements.
The national delegation consisted of 120 athletes who competed in 18 sports, as part of coordinated efforts between the Moroccan National Olympic Committee and the Royal Moroccan Sports Federations.
Athletics emerged as the leading force of Moroccan sport, finishing second behind Italy with 16 medals, including 7 gold, 4 silver and 5 bronze.
Among the highlights of the Games were the two gold medals won by Fatima Ezzahra Birdaha in the 5,000-meter and half-marathon events, as well as the accomplishment of Yassine Hssine, who won gold in both the 100-meter and 200-meter events.
Boxing, with nine participants, finished third with six medals, while karate, represented by seven participants, placed second with five medals. Taekwondo, with six participants, also finished second, winning four medals.
Judo, meanwhile, ranked fifth with three medals, while wrestling secured one bronze medal, with five participants competing in each of these two disciplines.
Tennis also performed strongly, finishing second with four medals from a delegation of five participants.
Gymnastics ranked seventh while earning Morocco a historic gold medal, while show jumping finished fourth with two bronze medals. In football, the Moroccan delegation finished fifth, winning two bronze medals.
However, in some other disciplines, Morocco failed to reach the podium notably in swimming, fencing, weightlifting, padel, shooting, triathlon and sailing.
Overall, this performance reflects the effectiveness of Morocco’s sports policy and the tangible progress made by the national sports system as a whole.
It also confirms that the Kingdom has built a solid sporting foundation and developed the competitive depth needed to join the podium across a wide range of disciplines.
