Air Force of Zimbabwe charity horse race funds to construct two clinics

THE Commander Air Force of Zimbabwe (AFZ) Charity Horse Race yesterday raised funds towards the construction of two clinics in underserved communities, as the initiative continues to channel proceeds from its annual event into projects in healthcare and education.

The event, held at Mashonaland Turf Club, brought together the military, business community, horse-racing enthusiasts and the public to raise resources for community development projects.

This year’s proceeds will contribute towards the construction of clinics at Mandizha in Rusape, Manicaland; and Malibeng in Beitbridge, Matabeleland South province.

Air Force of Zimbabwe Commander Air Marshal John Jacob Nzvede said construction of the two facilities was expected to be completed before the end of the year.

“The mobilisation of resources is ongoing and this horse race is part of the efforts to raise funds for these projects,” Air Marshal Nzvede said.

“It is anticipated that the construction of these two clinics will be completed before the end of the year. These interventions demonstrate that our collective efforts can translate into tangible facilities that directly improve the lives of communities.”

He said the fund had already demonstrated the impact of such interventions through the construction of an administration block at Simuchembu 2 Secondary School in Gokwe North.

The project, funded partly through proceeds from last year’s horse race and contributions from well-wishers, enabled the school to become a registered Zimbabwe School Examinations Council centre.

The development spared learners from travelling to other schools to sit examinations.

“This means that our intervention has not only provided infrastructure, but has also removed a practical barrier that students faced when accessing their examinations,” said Air Marshal Nzvede.

He paid tribute to Mashonaland Turf Club and other partners for their continued support, saying sustainable community development required contributions from different stakeholders.

He described the Commander AFZ Charity Fund as a vehicle through which individuals, businesses and other partners could channel assistance towards communities.

The charity initiative was complemented by an entertaining day of horse racing and aviation displays, with Sky Pillar Rock, a South African horse trained by Mr Mike Mallett, emerging as the winner after an exciting day of competition.

Air Force of Zimbabwe pilots also staged aerial displays following their participation at the recently concluded Africa Aerospace and Defence Exhibition in South Africa.

In his welcome remarks, Mashonaland Turf Club chairperson Mr John Smith describing the country as a safe destination for investors.

“Zimbabwe is a safe investment destination with vast opportunities, and we invite investors from home and abroad to come and invest, partner with our people and participate in the country’s development,” said Mr Smith.

The Commander AFZ Charity Horse Race has become an annual fundraising platform that brings together the military, the private sector, the horse-racing fraternity and the public in support of community development initiatives.
