An inmate at Zomba Prison in Malawi has scored 14 points in the Malawi School Certificate of Education (MSCE) examinations.
The result makes the inmate the highest-scoring prisoner among those who sat the examinations this year.
Malawi Prison Service spokesperson Steve Meke said 56 of the 74 inmates who took the exams passed, giving a pass rate of 75.6%.
The overall performance is an improvement on last year’s 68.7% pass rate, although the highest-scoring inmate then obtained 16 points.
Mr Meke said education would remain an important part of the prison service’s rehabilitation programmes.
The service uses education and other programmes to help inmates prepare for life after prison.
