**ZANZIBAR: **THE Finance Minister Khamis Mussa Omar has directed the Tanzania Revenue Authority (TRA), in collaboration with the Zanzibar Ports Corporation, to begin preparations for the equipment, systems and personnel required to provide services at the Mangapwani Integrated Port, ensuring it becomes operational efficiently as soon as construction is completed.
Ambassador Omar issued the directive during a visit to the Mangapwani Integrated Port construction project in Zanzibar to inspect progress on the strategic development and assess the preparedness of institutions expected to provide services at the port, including TRA.
He said Mangapwani Port was a critical strategic infrastructure project because of its capacity to accommodate large vessels once construction is completed in 2028. The port is expected to become an important customs operations hub and a source of government revenue through customs duties.
“Alongside the construction of port infrastructure, it is important for all institutions involved in providing services to jointly plan their requirements to avoid a situation where the port is completed while essential equipment and operational systems remain unfinished,” Ambassador Omar said.

He also emphasised the need for the Zanzibar Ports Corporation and TRA to align their implementation schedules to ensure services are available on time and port operations run efficiently.
Ambassador Omar expressed satisfaction with the project progress report, which indicated that construction had reached approximately 20 per cent, in line with implementation expectations for the period under review. The contractor continues to carry out work at the project site.
For his part, Zanzibar Ports Corporation Director Akif Ali Khamis said the Mangapwani Integrated Port was among the key projects expected to stimulate economic growth in Zanzibar and Tanzania as a whole by strengthening trade and cargo transportation activities.
