NORTHERN CAPE — A 50-year-old man, Ernest Khoza, will spend the next quarter-century behind bars following his conviction in a harrowing Warrenton house robbery and rape case. The Frances Baard District Management confirmed that the lengthy sentence brings a measure of closure to a violent 2018 home invasion that left a young family deeply traumatized.
On Tuesday, 11 August 2026, the court handed down a 15-year prison term for the house robbery charge and an additional 15 years for the rape conviction. According to the sentencing details, these terms will run concurrently with a previously imposed five-year sentence, resulting in an effective total of 25 years of direct imprisonment for Khoza.
The severe sentencing stems from a nightmare ordeal that unfolded on Thursday, 29 November 2018. A 34-year-old mother was sleeping in her Warrenton home alongside her husband and their two-year-old daughter when two armed intruders broke into the residence. One of the attackers was disguised with a balaclava.
The assailants aggressively demanded cash from the victim’s husband, subjecting him to brutal assaults that included electric shocks administered via a wire. The husband was subsequently dragged into a separate bedroom where the couple’s twin daughters were sleeping. While his hands and feet were bound, the second suspect ransacked the home, stealing a television set and various other household valuables.
In a deeply disturbing escalation, Khoza forced the mother—who was still holding her toddler—into the main bedroom. He ordered her to set the child down before raping her in the direct presence of her two-year-old daughter. Following the assault, both suspects fled the property. The victim eventually managed to untie her husband and comfort her children before alerting local authorities.
The complex investigation was spearheaded by Detective Sergeant Desmond Modise of the Provincial Organised Crime Investigating Unit. Through meticulous police work, Modise tracked the suspects to Barkly West, leading to their arrest on 26 February 2019.
During the subsequent trial, the victim positively identified Khoza, leading to his successful prosecution. A second accused was acquitted after investigators could not definitively link him to the crimes.
Following the verdict, the Frances Baard District Management publicly praised Detective Sergeant Modise for his unwavering professionalism and dedication. Officials noted that his relentless pursuit and diligent investigative work were instrumental in apprehending the suspects and ultimately securing the maximum penalty for these heinous acts.
