Wicknell Chivayo: Tanzanian Prophet Reveals Why He Stopped Tycoon from Attending His Service
The late Zimbabwean businessman Wicknell Chivayo had reportedly sought to attend an overnight church service led by Tanzanian Prophet Mwamposa shortly before his death, but the cleric says he personally turned down the request.
According to Prophet Mwamposa, Chivayo’s representatives approached him after the businessman expressed interest in attending the overnight service. However, Mwamposa said he decided against allowing him to attend, explaining that the tycoon’s presence could have affected how the congregation viewed the church and its work.
Mwamposa said he was concerned that some worshippers could conclude that the church had benefited financially from Chivayo, given the businessman’s reputation for supporting pastors and religious institutions.
The Tanzanian prophet said he wanted his congregation to understand that the church’s work was sustained by God rather than by donations from wealthy individuals.
He explained that Chivayo’s public profile and history of giving large gifts to religious leaders could have created a different perception among worshippers had he attended the service.
Mwamposa recalled telling those who had approached him that although Chivayo was known for contributing to many pastors, his appearance at the service could cause some people to interpret the church’s activities politically or financially. He therefore stood by his decision to refuse the request.
The revelation has attracted renewed attention following Chivayo’s death in a helicopter crash on September 30, 2026. The businessman and his wife, Lucy Muteke, were among those who died in the accident in Zimbabwe.
Chivayo was widely known for his lavish lifestyle and major financial gifts to people from different sectors, including religious leaders. His generosity had made him a familiar figure in several church circles across the region.
Mwamposa’s remarks have since drawn attention because they offer a glimpse into an interaction involving Chivayo shortly before his unexpected death. The prophet maintained that his decision was not motivated by hostility toward the businessman but by his desire to protect the perception and independence of his ministry.
