Date producers in Zagora expect output to rise by 10% to 15% during Morocco’s 2026-2027 season, extending the sector’s recovery from several drought-affected harvests.
Majid Abdessalam, who operates a date-processing unit in Zagora province, said early crop conditions pointed to stronger production across varieties including Jihel, Bousthammi and Medjool.
He attributed the improvement partly to a sharp decline in palm mite infestations and other diseases that had affected oasis farms during the drought.
Growers in Figuig also reported an improved outlook. Producer Fouad Ajdir said early varieties were already available, while Feggous and Medjool dates were expected to begin ripening in September.
Ajdir cautioned that labor shortages could increase harvesting costs and influence market prices.
The forecasts are assessments from local producers. The Agriculture Ministry has not yet published a national estimate for the 2026-2027 crop.
Morocco’s previous harvest was forecast at 160,000 metric tons, up 55% from 103,000 tons in 2024-2025.
Official figures show Drâa-Tafilalet supplied 76% of national output last season, while Souss-Massa and the Oriental region each contributed 11%.
